  • Source: American Council on Education (1973, 1983, 1992) (for net tuition); Barron’s (1978) and College Division of Barron’s Education Series (1992) (for Barron’s index in 1978 and 1992 and school SAT scores in 1992); the Higher Education Research Institute (for school SAT scores in 1978).

  • Notes: Twenty-seven of the original 34 C&B schools agreed to participate in this study. The C&B Survey in 1989 included only a subset of schools included in the 1976 survey; the college characteristic for the 1989 cohort is not reported for those colleges that were not included in the 1989 survey. Net tuition was calculated by subtracting the average aid awarded to undergraduates from the sticker price tuition. The Barron’s measure is coded as a continuous measure, ranging from 2 (Competitive colleges) to 5 (Most Competitive colleges) for our sample.
