A model of price adjustment

We formalize a decentralized market where consumers with privately-known preferences meet bilaterally with firms. The latter acquire information to raise their degree of price discrimination from second to first. In a dynamic setting where outside options are endogenous, information choices are strategic complements, possibly generating multiple equilibria across which consumers' surpluses and firms' investment in information are negatively correlated. While there exists a sequence of equilibria converging to perfect competition when trading frictions vanish, there exist other equilibria that fail to approach perfect competition. Our findings are robust to firm heterogeneity, entry, noisy signals, and consumers' price-setting power.

We study credence goods in a general model. A consumer may suffer a loss which is a continuous random variable. Privately observing the loss value, an expert can provide a repair at a price to eliminate the consumer's loss. All perfect-Bayesian equilibria are inefficient, in that some losses are not repaired. In closed form, we derive a pooling equilibrium (where losses are inferred to be in an interval), and a separating equilibrium (where losses are precisely inferred). If the expert can acquire an information structure on losses, the first best is achieved by a binary signal. Results are robust when cost and loss are random and correlated, and when there are multiple experts.

This paper incorporates a risk-neutral principal-agent problem into a random search model to study contracting and search in general equilibrium. I introduce heterogeneity in principals' and agents' production technologies in terms of the distribution of output across states of nature. Under optimal contracting, this heterogeneity can give rise to complementarity in contracting between specific principal and agent types. In contrast to complementarity in production, complementarity in contracting affects only the division of the surplus but not its size and can induce principals to engage in overly intense search before forming a match. I show that a reduction in search frictions and contractual innovations can induce principals to engage in overly intense search.

In a model where new jobs cannot start until some time in the future, we show that firms post vacancies in advance when the match surplus is high, and they post more vacancies but lower wages as the job starting time gets closer. The number of vacancies increases over time because firms prefer to pay the vacancy cost later rather than sooner. Wages decrease over time because vacancies posted early have to compete with a larger number of vacancies posted later. An equilibrium wage distribution with both a continuous component and a mass point exists even with identical and rational agents on both sides of the market. Wage dispersion is generated by the inter-temporal competition between vacancies posted at different times, and a mass point emerges due to the lack of wage competition among vacancies posted at the same time. Consistent with the model, we find college students who graduate in May are more likely to receive an offer in April than March, and the distribution of wage offers received in March first-order stochastically dominates the distribution of wage offers received in April.

Researchers are increasingly able to observe consumers’ behavior prior to a purchase, such as their navigation through a store or website and the products they consider. Such pre-purchase (or search) data can be valuable to researchers in a variety of ways: as an additional source of information to estimate consumer preferences, to understand how firms can influence the search process through marketing mix variables, and to analyze how limited information about products affects equilibrium market outcomes. We provide an overview of these three research areas with a particular emphasis on online and offline retailing.

We connect various streams of academic literature to analyze how alternative competition and regulatory policies may affect the development of digital financial services, and particularly of mobile payments. Our main objective is to highlight the extent to which existing models, often coming from related industries (such as telecom, payments, and banking) can be applied to study the effects of mobile money interoperability. We focus on four dimensions of interoperability. First, we consider mobile network interoperability (whether clients of one telecom can access another telecom's payment services) in connection with the IO literature on tying. Second, we discuss platform level interoperability (the ability to send money off-network) in light of the literature on compatibility. We also build on the behavioral IO literature to suggest how the effects of interoperability may be very heterogeneous across various types of firms and consumers, or even backfire. Third, we consider interoperability in the cash-in-cash-out agent network, in light of the literature on co-investment in network industries, and of more specific studies on ATMs' interoperability. Fourth, we discuss how the literature in banking and on data ownership can be used to understand interoperability of data. We conclude with some broader remarks on policy implications and on possible directions for future research.
