Call for Nominations: The Journal of Human Resources Editor

The Journal of Human Resources (JHR) is requesting nominations, including self-nominations, for the role of Editor-in-Chief of the journal.

The JHR is among the leading journals in empirical microeconomics. Intended for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners, each issue examines research in a variety of fields including labor economics, development economics, health economics, and the economics of education, discrimination, and retirement. Founded in 1965, the JHR features articles that make scientific contributions in research relevant to public policy practitioners.

Responsibilities

The JHR Editor

  • is an expert and leader in the field of economics, who is responsible for ensuring the content of the journal represents the best of the science of economics, including a broad spectrum of policy-relevant topics, as well as excellence and innovation in methods;
  • appoints and manages a diverse Editorial Board consisting of Coeditors and Associate Editors, who review articles and execute the vision of the Editor;
  • directs the routine peer review process in the submission system and leads the peer review process in editorial practice and policy, including maintaining the highest standards of peer review, scholarly collegiality, fairness and impartiality, responsible handling of decision clarifications/appeals, and timeliness;
  • evaluates requests to publish special issues and develops special issue content of value to the journal readership;
  • responds to issues related to navigation of emerging issues in scholarly publishing;
  • coordinates with the Institute for Research on Poverty at the University of Wisconsin and the University of Wisconsin Press on issues of best practices in scholarly publishing and the continued success and impactful presence of the journal.

Qualifications

Nominees should demonstrate meaningful experience in terms of their impact in the field of economics, leadership ability, and relevant scholarly journal editorial experience. Special attention will be given to nominees with high-impact research, experience across the subdisciplines of economics that demonstrates their ability to oversee a general interest journal, and nominees with previous experience with the JHR or similar journals.

Term

The Editor serves on a voluntary basis and receives an annual stipend. Editors traditionally serve a nonrenewable term of five years, with a minimum appointment of three years. The new Editor’s term will begin July 1, 2026.

Nomination and Selection

Nominations and self-nominations should be sent to the Managing Editor, Lisa Al-Amoodi, by email ([email protected]) by January 20, 2026. Questions can also be directed to the Managing Editor. A selection committee chaired by the current Editor will recruit and review candidates, with input from the current Editorial Board and final approval by the JHR Advisory Board. Candidates will be notified by April 15.
